Thunderstorms in the morning—in the afternoon, we’ll rely on thermals suitable for flying
Despite this morning’s thunderstorms, the participants, volunteers, and organizers are far from giving up on the day.
We’re expecting good cloud thermals on the leeward side starting in the early afternoon today! So keep your fingers crossed for us so we can complete Task 2 of this year’s Paragliding Flatlands today!
The task setters have mapped out a zigzag course of 63 km to the River Spree at Lübben. The start time has been tentatively set for 1:00 p.m. and may be pushed back at short notice if necessary. With this option, the organizers hope to give even the first pilots to take off the best possible chance of catching the thermals.
Update 02:50 p.m.
The task has been running for just under 2 hours now. Challenging conditions with shadows make getting up there a gamble. However, because the scoring is based on elapsed time, restarting doesn’t necessarily result in a loss of time. The clock doesn’t start ticking individually until the aircraft exits the Start-of-Speed cylinder.
So it’s still exciting!
Conclusion
Unfortunately, due to the shadows that began to form in the afternoon, the thermals developed much more sluggishly than expected. Because of the weak conditions, only about half of the participants were lucky enough to even exit the Start-of-Speed cylinder.
Only one pilot actually managed to fight his way all the way to the finish line—congratulations!
Trotz der morgendlichen Gewitter haben die Teilnehmer, Helfer und Organisatoren den Tag noch lange nicht abgeschrieben.
Wir erwarten heute ab dem frühen Nachmittag gute Wolkenthermik auf der Rückseite! Drückt uns also die Meteo-Daumen, dass wir heute Task 2 der diesjährigen Gleitschirm-Flatlands absolvieren können!
Die Tasksetter haben einen Zick-Zack Kurs von 63 km bis in den Spreewald nach Lübben ausgeknobelt. Der Startzeitpunkt ist zunächst auf 13 Uhr festgelegt worden und kann sich bei Bedarf kurzfristig noch hinausschieben. Mit dieser Option wollen die Organisatoren den Thermikanschluss möglichst auch den ersten startenden Piloten ermöglichen.

Knappe 2 Stunden läuft der Task jetzt schon. Schwierige Bedingungen mit Abschattungen machen das Hochkommen zum Glücksspiel. Durch die Elapsed Time Wertung führt ein erneuter Start jedoch nicht unbedingt zum Zeitverlust. Erst mit dem Verlassen des Start-of-Speed Zylinders wird die Zeit individuell gestoppt.
Es bleibt also spannend!
Fazit
Die Thermik entwickelte sich wegen der aufziehenden Abschattungen am Nachmittag leider deutlich zäher als erwartet. Durch die schwachen Bedingungen konnte nur etwa die Hälfte der Teilnehmenden sich glücklich schätzen, überhaupt den Start-of-Speed Zylinder zu verlassen.
Um das lokale Eiscafé Mischka war zudem ein geheimer Zylinder mit großer Anziehung gelegt, dessen Mittelpunkt heute von einigen Piloten zur Abkühlung aufgesucht wurde.
In addition, a secret cylinder with a strong gravitational pull was located around the local Mischka ice cream parlor, and today some pilots were heading to its center to cool off.
Ein einziger Pilot konnte sich tatsächlich bis ins Ziel durchkämpfen – herzlichen Glückwunsch!
